In the run up to the World Oceans Day, founders of environmental initiative Making Oceans Plastic Free (MOPF) are unveiling Tasini – a promising concept to replace the plastic bag in Indonesia, the second largest source of plastic pollution to the world oceans.
Tasini are reusable shopping bags made from recycled plastics that fold into marine animals who function as eco-ambassadors. Unlike other reusable bags, interdisciplinary scientists developed Tasini to combine fashion, convenience and environmental awareness, to make plastic bag pollution a thing of the past.
We are four friends from Germany and Indonesia and founders of the environmental initiative Making Oceans Plastic Free. We are passionate about the conservation of our oceans and it is our aim to preserve this gift to pass on to the next generations.
We developed Tasini inspired by our different backgrounds. Roger studying ways to reduce plastic bag use in a PhD research project; Pari holding a degree in Biology and researching Indonesian society as a cultural anthropologist; Adith consulting government and businesses on cleaner production; and Lia designing fun and creative products.
Indonesia – the world second largest source of marine plastic pollution
With a focus on Indonesia – the world second largest source of marine plastic pollution – we can make a real difference. But we believe that changing behavior around the world works best when it is easy and fun. This has been our inspiration to create Tasini.
With our own funds we have produced the first 1000 Tasini, but we are also conduction a crowdfunding campaign on INDIEGOGO to produce more Tasini bags from recycled plastic waste and run a larger environmental awareness campaign in Indonesia.
With our own funds we have produced the first 1000 Tasini. Now we need your support to achieve our 3 main goals:
- Launch a big environmental awareness campaign in Indonesia:
The likeable Tasini marine animals are the right environmental ambassadors to raise awareness about plastic bag pollution. With your funding we can create a big media campaign raising environmental awareness in Indonesia.
- Produce Tasini Bags from recycled plastic waste (PET):
Fabrics from recycled PET are not yet common in Indonesia. To produce the fabrics, large quantities need to be ordered. With your funding we will be able to fill the minimum order quantity and start using recycled plastic waste for our Tasini bags.
- Making Tasini affordable to everyone:
The more people we reach, the greater our impact to reduce plastic bag use. This is why we want to keep the price for Tasini as low as possible. With your funding, we can reduce costs for production while securing ethical and sustainable standards.
If you want to fund our campaign with an amount of your choice, you can find the “Back it” button on the top right. Also small contributions will be of great help.
If you are interested in distribution or wholesale of Tasini, please contact us at ideas@MakingOceansPlasticFree.com
If you want to support our campaign but you do not have a Credit Card, please contact us at ideas@MakingOceansPlasticFree.com
We understand that not anyone has the funds to contribute. If you like our idea and want to help you can still be of great support by sharing our campaign with your friends, family, colleagues, everyone. You can find the social media links on the top right.
What will happen after the campaign?
We are currently in the process of setting up a social enterprise. As a social enterprise we will be able to increase our outreach by producing and distributing Tasini on a larger scale. Beyond this initial crowdfunding we want to attain financial sustainability and reduce the need for external funding. We want to achieve this by financing our goals from the sales of Tasini. Using those funds we will continue with environmental awareness campaigns. We will produce Tasini bags from recycled plastic waste (PET) and we will make sure Tasini prices are as low as possible, while ethical and sustainable production standards are ensured.
What if the funding goal is not achieved?
Every contribution is appreciated and will help us get closer to our goals. We will continue to work hard. The more funds we can raise, the bigger the impact of our efforts to reduce plastic bag pollution.

We have founded this initiative because we strongly believe in the power of ideas, being inspired across cultures, and reaching out to other passionate people to join the cause of making oceans plastic free.
We want to encourage you to share ideas from this initative and contribute your talents, insights and more ideas. See our blog Ideas.
